Ganderbal, Apr 11 (KNO): The 334-km strategic Srinagar-Leh National Highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the Ladakh union Territory, was thrown open for traffic on Saturday after being closed for over six months due to heavy snowfall during winter.

As per wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), an official said that the highway was thrown open for the traffic for the vehicles carrying only essential commodities under the supervision of SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal.

However no public, private, or even pedestrian movement was or will be allowed from either side till further orders. The official further stated that as per the directions from Divisional Commissioner Ladakh there was an emergent need to ensure supply of essential commodities in the Ladakh UT.

The official said that about 20 oil tankers and other trucks carrying other essential commodities have been allowed to move towards Leh / Ladakh from Zojilla pass. Trucks/tankers will camp at Sonamarg on the previous evening of movement or early morning by 8:00 AM on the date of movement.

The 425-km highway was closed after heavy snowfall in the Zojla Pass stretch, which connects the cold desert Ladakh UT with the rest of the country—(KNO)
